Get Your Contraception Directly from Your Local Pharmacy

Did you know that many community pharmacies now offer free NHS contraception services?

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service makes it easier and more convenient to access contraception without needing to book a GP appointment.

What can pharmacies provide?

Participating pharmacies can offer:

  • The contraceptive pill for people who are already taking it and need ongoing supplies
  • The contraceptive pill for people starting it for the first time
  • Free emergency contraception (the morning-after pill)

How does the service work?

You can visit a participating pharmacy directly, or you may be referred by your GP practice or a sexual health service.

A pharmacist or trained pharmacy technician will offer you a private and confidential consultation. They will discuss your needs and help you decide on the most suitable option for you.

Who can use the service?

You do not need to be registered with a GP practice to access this service.

All contraception and emergency contraception supplied through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is provided free of charge.

Your pharmacy will only inform your GP that you have used the service if you give your consent.

Why use your local pharmacy?

Community pharmacies are often open for longer hours and can provide quick and convenient access to contraception advice and treatment. This helps ensure that more people can access the care they need, when they need it.
