What is a blood pressure test?
A blood pressure test checks whether your blood pressure is:
- Health
- Too high (hypertension)
- Too low (hypotension)
Blood pressure describes the strength with which your blood pushes against the walls of your arteries as it circulates around your body.
Why blood pressure testing is important
Low blood pressure is not usually serious but can cause dizziness or fainting.
High blood pressure often has no symptoms but increases the risk of:
- Heart attacks
- Strokes
- Kidney disease
Having your blood pressure checked is the only way to know if there is a problem, and it might save your life.
When should I have my blood pressure checked?
You should have your blood pressure checked:
- At any time if you are worried
- As part of an NHS Health Check if you are aged 40-74 (every 5 years)
- More frequently if you have high or low blood pressure, or are at increased risk of developing it.
Where can I get my blood pressure tested?
You can have your blood pressure checked:
- At your GP surgery
- At a local Pharmacy
- At home using your own device
Testing your blood pressure at home
Your GP or Nurse may ask you to monitor your blood pressure at home if they suspect high blood pressure.
Choosing a home blood pressure monitor
If you plan to check your blood pressure regularly:
- Buy a digital monitor
- Choose one that measures blood pressure at the upper arm
- Avoid wrist or finger devices, as they are less reliable
