Domestic Abuse: Help is Available

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or background. It is not limited to physical violence and can include emotional, psychological, sexual, financial, or controlling behaviour.

If you are experiencing abuse, or you are worried about someone else, you are not alone. Support is available.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is any pattern of behaviour used to control, intimidate, threaten, or harm another person within a relationship or family. It can happen between partners, former partners, or family members.

Examples include:

  • Physical violence or threats of violence
  • Emotional or psychological abuse, including intimidation, or isolation
  • Controlling or coercive behaviours, such as monitoring your movements, finances, or communications
  • Sexual abuse or coercion
  • Financial abuse, including controlling access to money or preventing someone from working
  • Digital abuse, such as tracking your phone or online activity

Abuse can happen to people of any gender and in any type of relationship.

When to seek urgent help

If you are in immediate danger, call 999. If it’s not safe to speak, you can call 999 and press 55 when prompted if you are using a mobile phone. This lets the police know you need help but cannot talk.

If you have been injured or need urgent medical attention, seek emergency care immediately.
