Bariatric Surgery Abroad

Recently, we have noticed an increase in patients opting for surgery abroad, especially weight loss procedures. While many private clinics overseas offer affordable options, the NHS cannot guarantee the safety or quality of these treatments, nor can we certify the credentials of the clinicians involved.

It’s crucial to thoroughly research any private clinics abroad before making a decision. We understand that NHS waiting lists can be long, but that is for good reasons. Although surgery abroad may be quicker, it is often less effective, and the care given pre- and post-surgery is not as comprehensive.

If you choose to undergo bariatric surgery privately or abroad, follow-up care must be provided by the same clinic that performed the surgery. Any private treatment, whether in the UK or abroad, should include pre-assessment, counselling, surgery, and follow-up care. For weight loss surgery, follow-up is recommended for at least 2 years to monitor for complications and ensure that your weight loss and nutrition is achieved and maintained safely.

NHS Bariatric Services will not provide routine follow-up care if your surgery was performed abroad. This also applies to GP practices, which cannot offer the regular blood tests recommended after such operations. The NHS will only manage emergency conditions related to your surgery, for example if you need to visit A&E.

Mount Pleasant Health Centre will not be able to refer you for weight loss surgery aftercare, or follow-up, on the NHS. We are also unable to provide the specialised aftercare needed, including regular blood test monitoring. We recommend seeking private follow-up care with a UK specialist for weight loss surgery you have chosen to have abroad, which will be at your own expense.
